Preparing for Primary School

This conference is primarily aimed to provide information and support for parents of children who are planning to start school in September 2018 or 2019.
Many of the topics will also be relevant to preschool staff, early intervention teams, junior infant teachers and SNAs who are preparing to welcome a child who has Down syndrome into their class.

Topics covered will include:

  • –  Choosing a school – what to look for.
  • –  Mainstream school, special class or special school? Pros and cons of each
  • –  Expectations of junior infants: what do schools expect from parents and what can parents expect from schools?
  • –  Assessments and reports: What do you need? When do you need them?
  • –  SNAs: How are SNAs allocated? What is the role of the SNA
  • –  Preparing your child for school – things you can do at home
  • –  Preparing your child for school – things that can be done in preschool
  • –  Preparing the school for your child:
    • General issues connected with Down syndrome (vision, hearing, language etc)
    • Specific information about your child: what does the school need to know?
    • Handover from Early Intervention Services
    • Resources
